  1. Data resource: 2014 Heiser, S. et al Plymouth Sound Undaria pinnatifida Records - Version 2.1

This dataset contains records from Heiser et al (2014) Assessing the extent of establishment of Undaria pinnatifida in Plymouth Sound Special Area of Conservation, UK Marine Biodiversity Records, page 1 of 8 doi:10.1017/S1755267214000608; Vol. 7; e93. The first UK record of Undaria pinnatifida was in the Hamble estuary (1994) and it was found off Plymouth in 2003. The authors assessed the distribution of U. pinnatifida and native kelps and their allies in Plymouth Sound (at 0 to +1 m relative to Chart Datum). Undaria pinnatifida was widespread along rocky shores, on other hard substrata and grew in the same areas as Saccharina latissima and Saccorhiza polyschides. Undaria pinnatifida was significantly more abundant on vertical substrata than on upward-facing hard substrata. It was almost as common as all of the other kelp species combined on vertical substrata but was outnumbered by native species on upward-facing substrata. Undaria pinnatifida has become the visually dominant macroalga in marinas and has spread to surrounding natural habitats in Plymouth Sound. The extent to which it will out-compete native kelps requires monitoring, especially in conservation areas.

  2. Data resource: 2014 Marine Biological Association (MBA) Yealm River non-native species timed search

Timed searches undertaken by the Marine Biological Association (MBA) to search for non-native species in the Yealm Estuary. Searches primarily focused on the Pacific Oyster (Magallana gigas), although other non-natives were recorded. Abundance was primarily Present/Not present, but in some cases non-standard units of abundance (eg. Not common) were used.

  3. Data resource: 2014 Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) site check survey of intertidal sediment flats of Loch Moidart, Lochaber

Site condition monitoring of the intertidal sediment flats of the Loch Moidart and Shiel Woods SAC was initiated in 2003. The work of the current 2014 study was to carry out a Site Check survey of the sediment flats to provide an assessment of the current condition of the intertidal sediment flat feature. The five relocatable transects established in 2003 were re-examined, which involved checking the presence and sequence of biotopes along the transects. A subsidiary aim of the survey work was to produce a biotope map of the sediment flats. This involved supplementing the site check data by walking over the area recording the nature of the substratum and conspicuous biota observed in the form of target notes at fixed positions.

  5. Data resource: 2015 onwards Swift Nest Boxes, UK

This dataset is intended to be a comprehensive inventory of common swift (Apus apus) nest boxes (nesting sites deliberately provided for swifts - nest boxes, nest bricks, etc, whether occupied yet or not. It includes records collected as part of various swift mapping projects including The Swift Inventory, The Swift Survey and The Swift Mapper. The aim of these projects was to better understand the reasons for the decline in swifts in the UK, and to help target conservation of swift nest sites. They collated data from a variety of sources, primarily a public request for information and local surveys. Between 2009-2015, records were collected as part of the ‘Swift Inventory’. This was a cooperative project involving the support of Concern for Swifts - Scotland, London's Swifts, Northern Ireland Swifts, the RSPB, Swift Conservation and UK Swifts. The ‘Swift Survey’ then ran from 2016 -2019. This was a national survey, including a website developed by Environmental Resource Management (ERM) to collect data from the public on nesting swifts. From 2020 onwards the ‘Swift Mapper’ tool has been used to collect records. The Swift Mapper is a mapping tool involving RSPB, Natural Apptitude, Swift Conservation, Action for Swifts and Swifts Local Network. Accompanying datasets of occupied nests, previously occupied nests and low-level screaming swifts (probable breeders) are also available on the NBN. This dataset will be updated annually.

  6. Data resource: 2015 Orkney Islands Council Harbour Authority (OICHA) Marine Non-Native Species Monitoring Programme

  7. Data resource: 2015 Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) Eden Estuary Intertidal Seagrass Survey

Trial Intertidal seagrass survey in conjunction with a Macroalgal Blooming (MAB) survey in the Eden Estuary, Scotland. This was for the EU Water Framework Directive Monitoring using the WFD (Angiosperm) Intertidal Seagrass tool. The tool looks at the species composition of the seagrass bed, the density (as percent cover) and the extent of the seagrass bed.

  8. Data resource: 2016 Coastwise and North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Croyde Bay Bioblitz

12 hour public survey run by Coastwise North Devon and North Devon AONB and held on 17th September 2016 of all species in all habitats within the Croyde Bay area. The aim of the survey was to record as many species as possible throughout the day. Records include subtidal, intertidal, and coastal habitat species. Part of a larger dataset that includes terrestrial and freshwater species.

  9. Data resource: 2016 Eastern Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities (EIFCA) Shrimp Trial Study in the Wash

This survey forms part of the preliminary survey work for the Shrimp trial project. Ground truthing was conducted using a video camera sled and day grab to assess and identify areas of subtidal mixed sediment within boxes E and D, identified as potentially suitable for the trial. The survey work was conducted east of Long Sand and east of Roger Sand.

  10. Data resource: 2016 Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) Sound of Barra underwater video and benthic infaunal grab survey - Version 2.2

This work consisted of 35 quantitative drop-down video drift survey sites and 72 infaunal grab samples and granulometry samples for Particle Size Analysis. This was targeted to 9 sampling boxes located within and outside the eastern side of the Sound of Barra SAC. Digital still photographs were taken at intervals of the video survey to enable description of seabed structure and species assemblages. The main aims of this investigation were to: (1) improve knowledge of the occurrence and distribution of species and habitats of recognized conservation importance (in particular, refining the distribution of Habitats Directive Annex 1 habitats); (2) determine the current condition of the maerl and coarse sediment habitats on the eastern side of the Sound of Barra SAC; and (3) contribute towards site condition monitoring of the SAC. This constituted the FRV Alba Na Mara cruise 0616A.
